After 15 years of experience in design and fashion event production, I’ve come to learn that time and effort and a dedicated team invests to improving the industry is what makes a difference.

The concept of ‘Know the Difference’ is the difference between those who compromise and those who don’t; those who pretend and those who refuse to; the ones who talk and the ones who act. To me knowing the difference is in the determination to continuously improve and develop, rather than keeping with the familiar; the safe.

When I walked through the doors of DENFAIR, back in June 2017, I saw the result of twelve months worth production and planning and it was then that I knew the effort it takes to make a difference.

Knowing the difference isn’t making a point about being better; it’s understanding the value of being different. Of existing with your own code of what’s integral to good design. That’s what we do at DENFAIR.

We appreciate well-designed objects for the embedded values of its designer; care, thought, attention to detail and their inherent layers of meaning. We facilitate a viewer’s experience of the intention, philosophy and creativity of designer and the maker. The difference is that we focus on design that carries more significance than pure functionality.

And so, it’s not just about products at DENFAIR, it’s being part of a community that shares the same values, that believes in the worth of inherent quality, and that understands commercial success will follow when you remain true to your own points of difference.

To me, to ‘know the difference’ is not an absolutist theory on design, nor to follow an unachievable way of living. It’s a prompt to start thinking critically about the objects in our life and an encouragement to initiate change.

Whether on a macro or micro level, the important thing is to question what it is about us, as designers and consumers, that perpetuates particular practices and outcomes in the industry. It’s about seeing the bigger picture: beyond trends, we must take responsibility for what we are contributing to the world of design.

DENFAIR’s high curation is what puts us at the forefront of design events in Australia. Our collective view is that the presentation of good design sparks discussion, and through discussion we can challenge the status quo.

Knowing the difference is about understanding: understanding design, materials and manufacturing, yes, but most importantly, understanding the people who we are designing for.

It’s about knowing the difference between real and fake; between the time it takes to research and develop an idea and the time it takes to just copy one. It’s about understanding the people behind a product and the details that make it. It’s appreciating the effort that goes into creating something that should last a lifetime, compared to something that will most likely contribute to waste.

DENFAIR, to me, provides this level of critical thinking via a platform that allows talented designers to come together, pursue learning and growth, and, as a cohesive entity, shape others’ conception of responsible design.

I see and experience the difference every time I walk through DENFAIR opening day doors; it’s not just the hands-on detailing or effort that we and our exhibiting brands go to in their creations, it’s also the atmosphere. I’m always impressed by the efforts of a collective of like minded individuals and professionals who come together once a year to celebrate and support the industry they are passionate about. As I wander up and down the aisles exploring, I’m constantly impressed by the individual stands - the colours, the textures, the sounds, the ever-changing installations and activations - all unique and quirky in their own way.
