The Pot

Arne Jacobsen

Known all over the world as the hotel in which the architect designed every detail, the SAS Royal Hotel is considered to be the most harmonious high-rise building in Copenhagen, and when it opened its doors the late 1950’s, it was considered the most modern hotel in Scandinavia. Created by Arne Jacobsen for the sophisticated Orchid bar, and astonishing winter garden, the Pot is a modern yet timeless design that was found on every floor of the hotel in 1959.

With improved comfort, modern materials and available in new playful fabrics, the Pot was relaunched earlier this year, returning in better shape than ever with the purpose of complementing contemporary interiors with its ‘50s signature sculpture.

Through the Pot and its siblings, Jacobsen wrote history within Danish design worldwide, creating icons that will withstand generations, many of which are still found in the Republic of Fritz Hansen™ collection today.

The Egg

Designed for the lobby and reception areas in the SAS Royal Hotel, Copenhagen, the Egg is one of the triumphs of Arne Jacobsen’s total design concept. The commission to design every element of the hotel, including its furniture, was Jacobsen’s grand opportunity to put his theories of integrated design and architecture into practice.

Like a sculptor, Jacobsen strove to find the shell’s perfect shape, experimenting through clay at home in his own garage. The result was a design that sits in sculptural contrast to the hotel’s almost exclusively vertical and horizontal surfaces, and offers a degree of privacy in otherwise public spaces; ideal for lounge and waiting areas as well as in the home.

The Swan

Arne Jacobsen’s attention to detail, in terms of functionality and choice of materials throughout the SAS Royal Hotel, including custom-designed individual objects, was much admired. Alongside the Egg, Jacobsen designed the equally iconic Swan for the Hotel’s lobby and lounge areas.

The Swan’s unique design, which avoids straight lines in favour of sculptural curves, was considered to be technologically innovative at the time of its creation in 1958. Jacobsen’s artistic talent was evident throughout the Royal SAS Hotel, and whilst the building itself was often titled ‘the punch card’ due to its resemblance to a stiff and straight piece of cardboard, the cleverly designed Swan and its siblings provided a soft, organic expression within.

The Drop

Arne Jacobsen

The Drop was originally produced by Arne Jacobsen in 1958 in a very limited number and exclusively as part of his masterpiece, the SAS Royal Hotel, Copenhagen. After more than 50 years in hibernation, the Drop was relaunched in 2014.

A small chair with a prominent personality, the Drop is as fresh and vibrant as a new design but with a rare heritage. Its structure combines a warm embrace with freedom of movement, resulting in a significant level of comfort.

With the SAS Royal Hotel as their backdrop, the Drop and its siblings shaped Jacobsen’s gesamtkunstwerk – a German expression for an all-encompassing aesthetic that incorporates multiple individual art forms to create a total work of art.
